CUEAFS: Vulgaria – Critical Reflection

Directed by:  Ho-Cheung Pang

Running time 92 Minutes

Released: August 2012

This film began with a warning message stating that the film may include discrimination  bad language and sexual references throughout.

The film is a about an unsuccessful film producer called Wai Cheung To trying to make some money by making a film. Over dinner, he agreed to make a sequel to a previous film for the leader of a gang called Brother Tyrannosaurus. Throughout the film, it shows him on his journey whilst he tried to find the right cast for this and facing troubles with his ex-wife. He is also accused of sexually harassing his assistant.

The film goes back and forth in time. Cheung is sat in a lecture theatre of a university being interviewed by a professor, and it’s here that he is telling the story. I really liked this idea as if breaks the film up slightly as it goes back to the interview. There are also a couple of shots where Cheung will turn to the camera and speak to his audience. This engages the viewer more. Within the university scenes, I found Cheung to come across quite rude.

Personally, I thought this film was absolutely shocking. The story line, was slightly embarrassing at the fact how silly/random it seemed. I thought the acting was terrible and it almost seemed like the film has been made just for the hell of it. I feel like the director has tried to be humorous with this film, however, I remained unimpressed.

Some people with a different sense of humour may really enjoy this film, however it just wasn’t my taste.
